The Data Migration Challenge
There are many reasons to migrate data from one storage system to another: to reduce infrastructure costs, to make backup-and-recovery processes more efficient, to address information security or compliance concerns, or to respond to business restructuring.
But it’s not unusual to have millions of pieces of unstructured data in a data repository—including personal or inappropriate data, multiple unnecessary copies and versions of the same documents, and content that has already exceeded its useful lifespan or required retention period.
You don’t want to include this irrelevant data in your migration. However, given the sheer volume of unstructured data in a repository, it can be extremely difficult and time-consuming—if not impossible—to accurately identify which documents need to be purged, archived and re-located.
So how can you quickly and easily identify your data and apply appropriate migration policies to it? How can you intelligently separate the important business information from unimportant or redundant data —especially since so much of your unstructured content may be poorly organized and not easily identifiable?
The Nogacom Solution
Nogacom provides you with an effective solution and methodology for achieving your data migration business objectives.
Assess your Data. First, using NogaLogic you can automatically identify, classify and assess your data based on its business value to your organization, and get a clear understanding of how it is used throughout its lifecycle. Through this process you will:
- Identify all your unstructured data, including all copies and versions —regardless of file formats, file names, or storage location
- Map assets by location to understand how your storage resources are currently utilized
- See when and by whom documents were last used
- Understand who owns data, what user permissions exist for this data, and how and to whom data was distributed
Define your Migration Policies. Once you have this granular visibility and full understanding of your unstructured data, you can then use NogaLogic to centrally define policies that will ensure that your migration process is efficient, complete, and supports your organization’s best practices. For example, you can define a policy that automatically migrates all information on your top ten customers—including all relevant documents, emails and spreadsheets etc.—to a high-performance flash drive. Or you can define a policy that automatically archives unnecessary old versions to tape. These policies can be defined using any combination of content attributes.
Enforce and Monitor. Once you have defined your migration policies, NogaLogic will then automatically implement them. You can even use NogaLogic to automatically apply your migration policies to any relevant new or updated documents on an ongoing basis. And with NogaLogic, you can continually monitor and assess your data so you can easily adjust policies and/or business practices as necessary to ensure compliance with business objectives and regulatory mandates.
Measure your Success. When you’ve completed your data migration project, you can re-assess your data once again to determine whether the policies accomplished their objectives—or if you need to fine-tune any policies or business practices to achieve the results you want.
